Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
