Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
