Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
